Chakras: The Rainbow of Life
Over this strange period we started to think about the saying “even if you are going through a storm, know that your rainbow is waiting on the other side”, and this “mantra” has provided us with the inspiration for our latest pieces. Rainbows offer a universal message that all will be alright in the end. And it’s no surprise that in “yogaland” rainbows are related to the chakra system.
As Yogis here at iris108 we are often asked what are the Chakras? The Chakra System is an understanding of the subtle energy within each and everyone of us and can offer us a framework with which to organise our thoughts and behaviourial patterns and feelings.
When we look closely at our experiences we can see that what happens within one layer can affect us on a deeper layer. Consider how your heart rate speeds up when we are frightened. Or how a sense of peace can envelop us when we receive a hug (these hugs have been far too infrequent over these past months) from loved ones. The worldwide level of panic as a result of Covid 19 and going forward into this changed world full of uncertainty will have affected us all on many different levels.
What goes on energetically within us can reveal itself in many different ways, such as trouble focussing or difficulty sleeping or even breakouts on the skin. So we suggest you consider sitting in a quiet place, ideally once a day to check in on how you are faring physically, mentally and emotionally.
With this in mind here is a Chakra checkin list!
- Starting at the point at the base of the spine. Begin with checking in with your Root Chakra (Muladhara) Ask yourself. Are you feeling grounded? Consider taking a moment to lie on your back and take some deep and measured breaths in and out. Make a conscious effort to connect with the living world and nature. Try kicking off your shoes and walking barefoot!
- Second is the Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) which is located in your lower belly Ask yourself. Are you hydrated? The suggestion is to wash your hands often when considering this point/Chakra in the body. We are of course doing this all the time in the light of this pandemic! Drink a large glass of water. Wash your hands and face again. Try taking a bath. Jot down how you are feeling.
- Third is the Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) which describes the network of nerves situated in the upper part of belly area behind the stomach. Ask yourself are you hungry. Think about what you have been eating and how you have been eating. Have you been spending too much time online? Consider trying to reign back from online activity and give yourself a break from the endless news cycle. Make yourself a simple meal from scratch.
- Forth Chakra is the Heart (Anahata) Chakra, located in and around your heart. Ask yourself are you connected to sources of love? Reach out to someone you love by placing a call? Writing a message? Sending a photograph saying you are thinking of them. Try stroking a pet if you have one or simply try stretching your arms out as wide as possible!
- Fifth point is the Throat Chakra (Visshudha) Check in with your 5th Chakra are you able to speak frankly? Can you share your personal experience of this time with someone you trust?
- Try and let go of judgements of others and most importantly of yourself. Wear a mask when you go out! The 6th Chakra is the Third Eye (Ajna) the point located between your eyes. Are you able to see the bigger picture? Try and find positive aspects in your life. If possible contemplate if this has been a valuable time to consider what is important in your life, try and prioritise your health. Try and write an ongoing gratitude list.
- Finally the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) located at the top of your head. Are you open to trying to create a sense of unity? Try meditation and any inverted yoga pose.
To conclude, in what ways can you protect, sustain and nurture your overall energy? Consider your entire system. Do at least one thing every day to take care of yourself. Take breaks from the news and social media. Rest and drink plenty of water. Eat healthy foods and move your body. Connect with those you love and set boundaries as needed
This time of coronavirus can be an opportunity. We have a chance as individuals to do things differently.
